Rifle Maintenance
Cleaning the bore of the rifle
It is of paramount importance to always shoot with a clean and well maintained rifle barrel. People ask why their rifle is producing erratic groups when it used to shoot a tight group. This is usually down to metallic and copper fouling building up in the lands of the barrel. There is no shortage of cleaning agents on the market:
- JB Compound
- Butch's
- Shooter's Choice
- Barnes Compound
- Hopps Bench Rest
- Sweets
J-B™ Bore Cleaner
This lime proven formula developed by Jim Brobst has been getting caked-in powder residue and copper jacket fouling out of barrels for more than 30 years. It is non-embedding, which
means it doesn't gel "stuck" in the pores of the barrel. Great to use If you are shooting moly coated bullets and sand barrel break in.
Shooter's Choice
Available in 2 oz, 4 oz, 16 oz. or 1 gallon. This bore cleaner is designed for use in regular rifle/handgun cleaning operations. It is very good for removing lead, copper, powder fouling in rifles/pistols and also can be used to remove shotgun wad fouling. Can be used on patches and brushes. After use, follow up with a rust preventative.
Forrest Bore Cleaner
Forrest bore cleaner is taking weapon cleaning into a whole new era. Forrest has developed and patented a novel foam technology solution for the cleaning of barrels in a wide range of firearms, from handguns and rifles which makes for easier and more efficient cleaning, resulting in what in my opinion is the finest bore cleaning agent on the market.
This technology makes for longer lifetime of the firearm as a result of almost total elimination of the need for the mechanical cleaning of barrels. It is a non-toxic, non-corrosive agent and effective in the removal of copper and brass compounds.
This therefore promotes quicker and easier maintenance and removes copper without mechanical cleaning in only 15 minutes. The product is packed in aerosol cans from 90 ml to 500ml. This exceptional high-yielding foam, from just one 90/140 ml bottle is sufficient to clean a 308-calibre rifle 30 to 35 times.
Kroil
This lubricating and penetrating oil is used by some shooters to clean their match barrels when shooting moly coated bullets. Also used with Shooters Choice to clean regular copper fouling.
Always read the manufacturers recommendation of application, we do not recommend leaving ammonia based solvents in the barrel more than 20 minutes at a time. Tests have shown that some ammonia based solvents can etch barrels that have previously been misused or not cleaned and permanent damage could result.
Dewey Cleaning Rods
Dewey cleaning rods have been around for years, and they are continually improving their product. Recently, they redesigned the bearing raceways in their rods.
The new bearings are captured in an aluminium sleeve pressed into the centre of the handle.
This new bearing system permits the rod handles to rotate with reduced friction (especially under load) and they will last much longer than the older handles. Dewey makes some of the finest rods on the market, and they are an excellent value for any level of shooter. Most Dewey rods (unless noted) are male threaded and require female threaded jags unless you use the brush adapter.
All Dewey rods come with a jag and most come with a brush adapter and the rod coating is extremely durable.
Dewey-Pierce Style Jags
These jags can be used to pierce the patch but also can be used as a wrap style jag. All jags are 8-32 threads except 17 cal. (5-40 threads). Available in male or female threads for most calibres.
